You may see holes from a mortise and tenon joint or other time-honored wood joining techniques. You may notice where a hinge or hook is used to hang. No two pieces of wood are the same - that is what makes these shelves so special! They are one of a kind. They have a long story already, and when you bring them into your home, that story continues with you.
